राजस्थान का शेखावाटी क्षेत्र अपनी अन्य विशेषताओं के साथ जिस लिए जाना जाता है वह है वहां की भव्य नक्काशी के साथ बनी हवेलियां। कॉलेज में पढ़ाई के दिनों में मैंने इन प्राचीन धरोहरों को करीब से देखा है, लेकिन हाल ही में वहां जाने का मौका मिला तो मैंने देखा कि पुराने जमाने में शाही ठाठ और अमीरी का प्रतीक रही ये हवेलियां तेजी से कमाई का जरिया बन रही हैं। दुनिया भर से पर्यटक इन हवेलियों को निहारने आते हैं और अब तो वे ठहरते भी इन हवेलियों में ही हैं। दरअसल अब इन हवेलियों को भव्य होटलों का रूप दे दिया गया है। पुराने तौर तरीके का शाही स्वागत और परंपरागत खाना न केवल विदेशी बल्कि स्वदेशी पर्यटकों को भी खूब लुभाता है। नए निर्माण के साथ कोई भी भव्य होटल बना लिया जाए, लेकिन इन परंपरागत होटलों की अपनी अलग पहचान है। यहां की हवेलियां मुख्य रूप से दो वर्र्गों से संबंधित रही हैं। पूर्व रजवाड़े और सामंत और दूसरा मारवाड़ी वर्ग जो भले ही आज देश और दुनिया भर में प्रमुख कारोबारी समुदाय के रूप में जाना जाता है, लेकिन उनकी असली पहचान यहीं से जुड़ी है। पूर्व शाही घरानों ने मौजूदा होटल व्यवसाइयों के साथ मिलकर हिस्सेदारी में इन हवेलियों को होटल का रूप देकर 'चोखी कमाईÓ का जरिया बना लिया है। वहीं, देशभर में आज दिखने वाले कॉरपोरेट जगत के कई दिग्गजों के पूर्वजों की हवेलियां भी इस क्षेत्र में हैं। गोयनका, पोद्दार, सिंघानिया, रुइया, बिरला आदि सरनेम वाले बिजनेस घरानों की जड़ें इन हवेलियों से जुड़ी हैं। इनके पुरखों की हवेलियां अब भी शेखावाटी क्षेत्र में मौजूद हैं। ये लोग देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों और विदेशों में बड़े कारोबारी बन गए हैं, लेकिन ये जब भी लौटते हैं तो अपने पुरखों की इन हवेलियों को जरूर निहारकर जाते हैं। पुराने जमाने की यह विरासत आज के युवाओं को बड़े पैमाने पर रोजगार देने का जरिया बन गई है, क्योंकि यहां का पर्यटन उद्योग महलों, किलों और हवेलियों पर ही टिका है।
